SAFARI

Safari

Safari is a generation puzzle in wood, for children in the age between 2-7. It’s main purpose is to encourage play between siblings in different age groups.

The project was made in the course Toy Design in collaboration with toy company Fisher Price. The theme for the project was Kids for Kids - Social Responsibility. I therefor chose to focus on the relationship between siblings, since it is usually our first and maybe even our most important.

The puzzle consists of 54 parts and is designed to go from easy to complicated, from two dimensional to three dimensional. The puzzle forms a stage, an island, and when the puzzle is done, the play continues with the 3d puzzled animals.

The idea with the puzzle is for the play to continue even after the puzzle has been solved. The children have then built the animals and the island and formed a playground where a new game takes place.

The Elephant Ella, Lucas the Lion and Bird Bella all represent an sibling in the family and the child can identify with one of the animals as the play goes on.

The simple pieces are easy to grip and have a specific place in the baseplate so even very small children can play. The even harder pieces are flat and meant for the elder child. The most difficult part is the three dimensional plants and animals, and in which cases, you might need a parent to solve it, making it fun for the whole family.
